In 1997, the newly amalgamated City of Toronto launched a contest to design a new flag to represent the six-city merger. After two years of reviewing designs and months of debates by City Council, Deputy Mayor Ootes called on the audience at a City Council meeting to decide on their preferred flag design. The crowd overwhelmingly supported keeping the flag.
